About RightsCheckup

RightsCheckup is a set of plain-language guides to California workplace law, written for employees. Each guide answers one question, the way people ask it, and shows the law the answer comes from.

RightsCheckup is a project of Zabaca LLC.

The guides explain what California law says in general. They are legal information, not legal advice. RightsCheckup is not a law firm, and reading a guide does not make anyone your lawyer. Your situation may turn on facts a guide can't see; when it does, the guide says so and names the agency that handles it.

How guides are checked

Every claim in a guide is checked against the text of the statute, regulation or agency page it cites, and each guide shows the date that check was made. Each answer carries one of three labels: Settled by law, when a statute or regulation decides it; Depends on facts, when it is true only if a fact the law names holds up; and Agency's reading, when the law leaves words open and the answer is the enforcing agency's published reading of them, which the guide names and quotes. The guides don't apply court decisions to anyone's situation.

Rates on the city minimum-wage pages come from published rate tables and are dated on each page.

Privacy

We count visits with PostHog analytics: which pages are read, which answers in a guide's check are picked, and where visitors come from, so we can tell which guides help. It sets a cookie to tell one visit from the next, and it doesn't know who you are. Nothing you type into the search box or a pay check is sent, and screens are never recorded. A browser set to "Do Not Track" is not counted. There are no accounts and no sign-ups, and nothing is sold or shared.
